With so much more uncertainty around us than is usual, I’ve noticed more people feel somewhat compelled to follow news, the media and other sources of current info.
This of course, will exacerbate already growing fears.
Yes, times are strange, things are different and of course we need to keep aware of situations and events that may affect us personally. But – a short, quick glance at local news in your area is definitely preferable for one’s sanity and well-being than watching endless videos and TV or reading news articles.
If you’re feeling worried and/or fearful, It means your thoughts are in the future, often in ‘what if’ mode.
What if ……………….happens? If we think like that, we quickly become worried about our well-being and safety and the safety of our loved ones. I’ve observed how fast those thoughts can turn into anxiety!
So what to do about it?
First step – Acknowledge your thoughts and feelings. They’re normal and not wrong.
Second step – Accept its ok to have times when you’re feeling worried about the future. Don’t be annoyed or cross with yourself.
Third step – Act. You’ve noticed and acknowledged your feelings and a accepted that they’re perfectly normal and now it’s time to ask yourself a leading question. “Do these thoughts (and ensuing feelings) serve me well? Do they enhance my mental, physical and emotional good health? Do they bring me the peace and happiness I desire?”
Of course the answer you will come up with is no. Ask yourself “what (healthy) action can I take to feel calmer, happier and more at peace right now, in this moment?”
Some examples of healthy Actions may be – meditate, do some exercise, create something you enjoy making, read something positive and uplifting, watch a happy movie, write, paint, draw, do some gardening, sing, listen to uplifting music, give your dog a massage (with three who adore gentle massages, this always works for me) have a rest and lie down with your cat (as I write I have two snuggled on my lap!)
Many people avoid their feelings with addictive practices, but sadly, this never leads to happiness, peace of mind or the self confidence required to lead a happy, purposeful, fulfilling life.
A good start to finding your best course of action is to stop, slow down your breathing and remind yourself that right now, in this moment, you’re safe and everything is ok. Especially in difficult times it is unhelpful to let our thoughts and feelings run riot with fear of what might (or might not) happen.
Often we don’t have a choice of what goes on ‘out there’ but remaining calm and focussed on all the good we already have in our lives, means we have a better chance of staying strong, empowered and hopeful and we can appreciate and enjoy each present moment as Every Day Gets Better. 😊❤️
