Step 1 – there’s only one step.
Learn to keep your mind focused in the present moment. But what does that really mean you may ask?
I live in Australia where it’s mid summer and hot! Yesterday we were at the local park (which is near the beach) walking our dogs when a young boy ran out in front of a car that was travelling too fast. It was momentarily scary, but fortunately the car screeched to a halt just in time and although he fell over, the child was unhurt. But, the boy was crying uncontrollably, many people were upset, including onlookers and there was quite a bit of anger and yelling going on from the boy’s family.
As we weren’t really close by and there were obviously many people around attending to the boy, we didn’t offer assistance and kept walking. We had three dogs to take care of and they were getting nervy with the commotion and all the yelling so we wanted to go somewhere calmer to enjoy our evening walk. We were focussed in our present moment.
As we walked, both my myself and my husband said, ‘what a good example of people not being here and present in the moment’. We weren’t criticising, just observing. The family, prior to the incident, were packing picnic things into their car, talking and shouting to friends still in the park and no-one was taking much notice of the children playing near the road.
The driver of the car obviously wasn’t consciously present in the moment as he was driving too fast, especially in a busy holiday makers, picnic area in a beach resort on a hot day.
Which brings me to How to Have Your Best Year Yet.
Learn the ancient art of Mindfulness.
Mindfulness simply means knowing where you are, what you’re doing and how you’re feeling in any given moment – no judgment required, just noticing. Think about it – most people operate on auto pilot, not consciously aware of what’s going on in themselves or in their surroundings. The people with the little boy being a prime example. If they were focussed in the moment, the incident may not have occurred, but even if it did, things may have been dealt more calmly and without the angry outbursts at the little boy and others.
If you want to feel better, get better results from life and enjoy each day to the fullest – practice Mindfulness – right throughout your day.
Even when life gets tough, which it will at times despite our best plans, if you’re Mindfully here and present, fully conscious and not on auto pilot, you’ll feel calmer, more in control and you’ll make more suitable and appropriate decisions about how you’d like your day, and your life, to progress.
It takes practice but as you develop the skill, Every Day Gets Better.
I wish you a wonderfully here and present new year! 💛😊🎉
