When you begin a task, do you aim for perfection?
Do you believe that unless a perfect result is achieved, it’s not worthwhile doing?
Like me, did you grow up with the conditioning that affirms “practice makes perfect”. Or another one, “it’s not worth doing unless it’s done properly”.
Yikes!! It’s a wonder we start anything if we subscribe to these beliefs!
Yes, we do need to do things to the best of our ability but sadly, if perfection is the aim, you’ll may be setting the standard too high and you may not follow through and finish what you started whether it be a job you are wanting to get out of the way or a long or short term goal you are wanting to bring to fruition. If we constantly put so much pressure on ourselves to be perfect, the opposite can occur. I’ve found it’s way better to aim for steady progress.
I like to reflect at the end of each day and note what I have accomplished. I find it helpful to notice what I set out to achieve and what I actually got done, according to my plans. Did I get side-tracked or did I stay on track and get the result I was aiming for? If I got the result I was after, it means I made good progress. If I didn’t, perhaps I need to make new plans, and set smaller, more acheivable goals and be able to relax at the end of my day in the knowledge that I did what I started out to do, and did it well.
Sadly, many people don’t even begin certain projects because they are afraid they won’t get it right and failure may be imminent and if they fail, how will they feel about themselves and what will people think?
Well, it’s been my experience that there’s no such thing as failure. There are however, many, many times when I’ve felt like a total failure only to later realise that I learnt so much from the experience that I was able to do much better next time – and isn’t that what life is all about.
So begin those projects today and step by step, see them come to fruition and be sure to celebrate your successes along the way!
Procrastination comes from fear – banish the fear by taking action NOW, and enjoy your life more as
EVERY DAY GETS BETTER!
All the best!
